Hon. Senator Raoul Dandurand, K.C., P.C.

 

DANDURAND, Hon. Senator Raoul, K.C., P.C., LL. D., - Montreal; Director, Montreal Trust & Deposit Company; Director, Montreal Cotton Company; Director, Sun Life Assurance Company; President, City & District Savings Bank; Director, West Canadian Collieries; President, Fire Insurance Company of Canada. Born Montreal , Nov. 4, 1861 , son of Oedipe and Marie Marguerite ( Roy ) Dandurand. Educated: Collège de Montréal; Laval University (LL.B., 1882; LL.D., 1909); McGill University (LL.D., Hon., 1910). Called to the Quebec Bar, 1883; created K.C., 1898; conjointly with Charles Lanctot, K.C., Asst. Attorney General, for Province of Quebec, published a treatise on criminal law, and manuals for J. P., and for police officers. Called to the Senate by Lord Aberdeen, Jan. 22, 1898; Speaker of the Senate, 1905-09; elected President, Local Branch, Interparliamentary Peace Union, formed at his instigation, 1907; called to the Privy Council, 1909; Minister of State in present Federal Cabinet and Leader of the Government in the Senate. Has served as a Royal Commissioner on Education, Quebec, 1910; represented Canada at the unveiling of the Monument to Montcalm, France, 1909. Created a Knight of the Legion of Honour, by the French Government, 1891; as Officer in 1907, and a Commander in 1912. For his services during the War to the French and Belgian Relief Funds, was made Commander of the Belgian Order "Pour la Couronne," and was given the Gold Medal of La Reconnaissance Française by Marshal Fayolle, who headed a French Delegation to Canada, in June, 1921; President, Committee of L'Institut des Ecoles Ménagères; Vice-President, Federation L'Alliance Française; President, Committee France-Amérique, Canadian Section; his portrait by Franchère added to Parliamentary collection, Ottawa, 1909. Married Josephine Marchand, daughter of late F. G. Marchand, later Premier of Quebec, Jan., 1886. Clubs: Mount Royal ; Forest and Stream; Montreal ; Canadian; Rideau ( Ottawa ). Liberal. Roman Catholic. Residence: 548 Sherbrooke Street W., Montreal.
