John Walsh

 

Walsh, John (1830-1898), Roman Catholic archbishop of Toronto (1889-98), was born in the parish of Mooncoin, Kilkenny county, Ireland, on May 23, 1830, the son of James Walsh and Ellen Macdonald. He was educated at St. John's College, Waterford, and at the Seminary of St. Sulpice, Montreal, Canada. He was ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic Church in 1854. In 1867 he was consecrated bishop of Sandwich, a title changed in 1868 to bishop of London ; and in 1889 he was installed as archbishop of Toronto. He died in Toronto on July 31, 1898. In 1867 he received the degree, of D.D. from the Vatican.
