Jean-Baptiste de La Vérendrye

 

La Vérendrye, Jean Baptiste de (1713-1736), fur-trader, was born at Sorel, Canada, on September 5, 1713, the eldest son of Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de La Vérendrye. He accompanied his father to the West in 1731, and in 1734 he founded Fort Maurepas on the Red river. On June 8 1736, he met his death at the hands of the Indians on an island in lake Superior.
