Ernest Gagnon

Gagnon, Ernest (1834-1915), author and musician, was born at Louiseville, Lower Canada, on November 7, 1834, the son of Charles Édouard Gagnon and Julie Jane Durand. He was educated at Joliette College, and studied music in Europe. From 1864 to 1909 he was organist of the Quebec Basilica; and for over thirty years he was secretary of the department of agriculture and public works in Quebec. He died in Quebec on September 15, 1915. Apart from a large number of musical compositions, he published Chansons populaires du Canada (Quebec, 1865; 2nd ed., 1880; 3rd ed.; 1894; 4th ed., 1900; 5th ed., Montreal, 1908; 6th ed., 1913), Lettres de voyage (Quebec, 1876), Le comte de Paris à Québec (Quebec, 1895), Le fort et le chateau Saint Louis (Quebec, 1895), Le palais législatif à Québec (Quebec, 1897), Louis Jolliet (Quebec, 1902; 2nd ed., Montreal, 1913), Choses d'autrefois (Quebec, 1905), Feuilles volantes et pages d'histoire (Quebec, 1910), and Hommes et choses d'autrefois (Quebec, 1917). He also printed for private circulation Famille Charles Edouard Gagnon (Quebec, 1898; new ed., 1914).
