Chat, cape, a cape on the north shore of the Gaspé peninsula. The name is first found on Champlain's map of 1613 as "C. de Chatte", and may be derived from that of Aymar de Chaste (or Chatte), who was granted a charter for the colonization of Canada in 1603, and sent Champlain to Canada in that year. But the resemblance of the cape to a cat has resulted in the name being more generally derived from the French chat (cat).
