Banque du Peuple

Banque du Peuple, a chartered bank founded in Montreal, in 1843, with the object of catering to the French-Canadian population. It was, in fact, the outcome of the nationalistic movement among the French Canadians at this time. For nearly half a century it had a useful and successful career; but mismanagement wrecked it in 1894, and in 1895 it closed its doors. It was the predecessor of a number of banks which have been French-Canadian in their management and clientèle.
