Pauline Johnson

Johnson, Emily Pauline (1862-1913), poet, was born at "Chiefswood", Six Nation Indian Reserve, Ontario, in 1862, the second daughter of George Henry Martin Johnson, chief of the Six Nation Indians, and Emily Howells, of Bristol, England. She was educated at the Brantford Model School, and at an early age contributed verses to periodicals. Her first volume of verse was White wampum (London, 1895), and this was followed by Canadian born (Toronto, 1903). She died at Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 7, 1913. Her collected poems have been issued under the title of Flint and feather (Toronto, n.d.), with a biographical sketch. See also Mrs. W. Garland Foster, The Mohawk princess (Vancouver, 1931).
