Ouananiche

Ouananiche, a form of the Atlantic salmon which does not go to sea, but spends its whole life in freshwater lakes. The best known ones are those of lake St. John in the province of Quebec, but similar "land-locked" varieties are said to occur in other lakes of Quebec. They are very highly regarded as game fish. Similar freshwater forms of the Atlantic salmon are found in some lakes in New Brunswick and Maine, and in lake Wenern in Sweden. See U. T. D. Chambers, The ouananiche and its Canadian environment (New York, 1896).
