John Cook

 

Cook, John (1805-1892), clergyman was born in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, on April 13, 1805, and was educated at Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities. He was ordained a clergyman of the Church of Scotland in 1835, and came to Canada in 1836. For many years the minister of St. Andrew's Church, Quebec, he played a prominent part in bringing about the union of Presbyterians in Canada in 1875, and was the first moderator of the Presbyterian Church! in Canada. He was also one of the founders of Queen's University, Kingston, and was its principal in 1857-8. In 1861 he was appointed principal of Morrin College, Quebec, and this position he retained until his death at Quebec on April 1, 1892. In 1880 the degree of LL.D., was conferred on him by Queen's University, Kingston.
