Jacques de Chambly

 

Chambly , Jacques de (d. 1687), governor of Acadia (1673-77), came to Canada as an officer of the Carignan Regiment in 1665. He built Fort St. Louis (now Fort Chambly ) on the Richelieu, and was its commandant. In 1672 he was granted the seigniory of Chambly ; but he did not live long on his seigniory. From 1673 to 1677 he was governor of Acadia ; from 1677 to 1679 he was commandant of the troops in the Isles; in 1679 he was appointed provisionally governor of Grenada, and in 1680 governor of Martinique .
