Douglas Mackinnon Baillie Hamilton

12th Earl of Dundonald

 

Dundonald, Douglas Mackinnon Baillie Hamilton, 12th Earl of (1852-1935), soldier, was born on October 29, 1852, the son of the 11th Earl of Dundonald. He was educated at Eton, and entered the 2nd Life Guards in 1870. He served in the Nile expedition. of 1884-5 and in the South African war, and rose in 1900 to the rank of major-general. In 1902 he was appointed general officer commanding the Canadian militia; but in 1904 he fell foul of the Laurier government over its exercise of political patronage in militia appointments, and was dismissed from office. In 1907 he was promoted to be lieutenant-general; and he served overseas in the Great War of 1914-18. He died on April 11, 1935. See his autobiography, My army life (London, 1926).
