Duncan Finlayson

Finlayson, Duncan (1795-1862), fur-trader, was born at Dingwall, Scotland, in 1795, the son of John Finlayson, later of Montreal, and younger brother of Nicol Finlayson. He entered the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1815. He was promoted to the rank of chief factor in 1831, and was in that year in charge at Red river. From 1833 to 1837 he was on the Columbia ; from 1839 to 1844 he was governor of Assiniboia; and in 1844 he succeeded James Keith in charge at Lachine. He retired from the Company in 1855, but was reappointed, and retired finally only in 1859. He died in London, England, on July 25, 1862 . He was a brother-in-law of Lady Simpson, the wife of Sir George Simpson.
