Louis DuPont du Chambon

Sieur de Vergor

Vergor, Louis DuPont du Chambon, Sieur de (fl. 1712?-1763), soldier, was born in France about 1712, the son of Louis DuPont du Chambon. He obtained a commission in the French army, and in 1751 was sent to Canada , with the rank of captain. In 1754 he was placed in command at Fort Beauséjour, and he surrendered this fort to Monckton on June 16, 1755, without attempting a defence. He was tried by court-martial at Quebec in 1757, but was acquitted of the charges brought against him, and returned to duty in the army. It was his misfortune that he was in command of the post at the Anse-au-Foulon (Wolfe's Cove) when the British made their landing here before the battle of the Plains. After the conclusion of peace, Vergor returned to France ; but nothing appears to be known of his subsequent career. In 1752 he married Marie-Josephte Riverin; and by her he had four children, the youngest of whom was born in 1763.
