Joseph R. Smallwood

The Case for Newfoundland Joining Canada

[1946]

In 1946, at the time when the National Convention to consider the future of Newfoundland was about to be elected, Joseph R. Smallwood sent a series of fourteen letters to St. John's Daily News to make the case for Newfoundland to join Canada. In these letters, he outlined, in his usual casual, yet effective, style the arguments for Confederation. The arguments used formed the essential arsenal of the pro-Confederation forces in the period of 1946 to 1949.
