About Claude Bélanger

Captain Bob Bartlett's House

Bob Bartlett was one of the most prominent citizens of Brigus. For quite a long time, Brigus was one of the most important commercial centers of Newfoundland, one that was especially significant in the sealing industry. The community produced several master mariners who made a name for themselves and spread the fame of sailors from Newfoundland. Bob Bartlett accompanied Peary in 1909 and 1914 in his Arctic expeditions. He was the son and grandson of mariners and followed readily in their footsteps. In keeping with the prominence of the family in Brigus, they build a splendid house that was called "Hawthorne Cottage".
