The Hipped Saltbox House with Linney (2)

The side view of the house allows us to see the sharp pitch of the roof that characterized the saltbox house that had the linney at the rear of the house. The linney usually had a door providing the most common exit used by the family. It broke the symmetry that usually characterized the saltbox type of houses.

The central chimney was common in the hipped saltbox type of houses. This style of houses was governed by functionality rather than by elaborate attempts at aesthetic. They could be constructed fairly easily with materials readily available throughout the country.
