Edward Braddock

Braddock, Edward (1695-1755), soldier, was born in 1695, the son of Major-General Edward Braddock. He entered the British army in 1710 as an ensign in the Coldstream Guards; and he became lieut.-colonel in command of this regiment in 1745. In 1754 he was appointed commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America, with the rank of major-general. He was in command of the force sent to reduce Fort Duquesne in 1755; and he was mortally wounded in the battle of the Monongahela on July 9, 1755. He died four days later.
