Louis-François Laflèche

Laflèche, Louis Francois Richer (1818-1898), Roman Catholic bishop of Three Rivers (1870-98), was born at Ste. Anne de la Pérade, Lower Canada, on September 4, 1818. He was educated at the College of Nicolet, and was ordained a priest in 1844. From 1844 to 1856 he was a missionary in the North West ; he was then successively a professor in the College of Nicolet, vicar-general of Three Rivers, coadjutor to the bishop of Three Rivers, and in 1870 bishop of Three Rivers. He administered this see until his death on July 14, 1898. He was the author of Quelques considérations sur les rapports de la société civile avec la religion et la famille (Montreal, 1866), and Conférences (Three Rivers, 1885). [Laflèche was a leading ultramontane cleric in Quebec in the second half of the XIXth Century.]
