James Abercrombie

Abercrombie, James (d. 1775), soldier, was a captain in the 42nd Regiment of Royal Highlanders in 1756. In 1759 he was appointed aide-de-camp to General Amherst; and he took part in the campaigns in Canada in that and the following year. In 1760 he was gazetted major in the 78th Regiment (Fraser's Highlanders) ; and in September of that year he was the emissary who conducted the negotiations with the Marquis de Vaudreuil which resulted in the surrender of Montreal. In 1763 he retired on half-pay; but in 1770 he resumed active service, as lieutenant-colonel commanding the 22nd Regiment, which was then serving in America. He was killed at the battle of Bunker's Hill on June 17, 1775.
