Charles Chaboillez

Chaboillez, Charles (1772-1812), fur-trader, was born in Montreal in 1772; the son of Charles Jean Baptiste Chaboillez, and was educated at the College of Montreal. He entered the service of the North West Company about 1793, when his sister married Simon McTavish; and he became a partner of the Company before 1799. For many years he was in the Red River and Assiniboine district; but from 1807 to 1809 he was at the Pic, on lake Superior. He retired from the fur-trade in 1809, and was elected a member of the Beaver Club of Montreal. He died at St. Henri de Mascouche, Lower Canada, and was buried at Terrebonne, on December 29, 1812 . He brought back with him from the West four halfbreed children, who were baptized at Terrebonne in 1811; and the same year he married Jessy Dunbar Selby Bruyères, daughter of Capt. John Bruce, adjutant of the 10th Veteran Battalion, but he had by her no children. See E. Z. Massicotte, Les Chaboillez (Bull. rech. hist., 1922).
