Charles Jean-Baptiste Chaboillez

Chaboillez, Charles Jean Baptiste (1736-1808), fur-trader, was born at or near Michilimackinac in 1736, the eldest son of Charles Chaboillez, a fur-trader, and Marie Anne, daughter of Jean Baptiste Chevalier. He engaged in the fur-trade, and his name occurs repeatedly in the fur-trade licences from 1769 to 1787. The statement has been repeatedly made that he became a partner in the North West Company; but there is no evidence of this. It is clear that he has been hopelessly confused with his son Charles. He died in Montreal on September 25, 1808. In 1769 he married Marguerite (d. 1798), daughter of Jacques Larchevèque dit La Promenade; and by her he had two sons and seven daughters. One of his daughters, Marie Marguerite, married in 1793 Simon McTavish; another, Adelaide, married Joseph Bouchette; and a third, Marie Louise Rachel, married in 1803 the Hon. Roderick Mackenzie.
