Sir George Parkin

 

Parkin, Sir George Robert (1846-1922), educationist and author, was born at Salisbury, New Brunswick, on February" 8, 1846, the son of John Parkin. He was educated at the University of New Brunswick (B.A., 1868; M.A., 1873; LL.D., 1894), and at Oxford University. From 1868 to 1872 he was headmaster of the Bathurst Grammar School ; from 1874 to 1889 of the Collegiate School, Fredericton ; and from 1895 to 1902 of Upper Canada College, Toronto. In 1889 he made a lecture tour of the Empire, at the request of the Imperial Federation League; and in 1902 he was appointed organizing representative of the Rhodes Scholarship Trust. This position he held until his death at London, England, on June 25, 1922. In 1878 he married Annie Connell, daughter of William Fisher, of Fredericton, New Brunswick ; and by her he had one son and four daughters. In 1898 he was created a C.M.G., and in 1920 a K.C.M.G. He was a D.C.L. of Trinity University, Toronto (1898), and an LL.D. of McGill University (1903). His chief publications were Reorganization of the British Empire (London, 1882), Round the Empire (London, 1892), Imperial federation (London, 1892), The great Dominion (London, 1895), Edward Thring, headmaster of Uppingham school (London, 1898), Sir John Macdonald (Toronto, Makers of Canada, 1908), and The Rhodes scholarships (Toronto, 1912).
