Pierre DuCalvet

DuCalvet, Pierre (d. 1786), merchant, was a native of France who came to Canada by way of Acadia. In 1760 he was engaged in the fur-trade at Quebec. He espoused the cause of the Americans in 1775-8, and was in 1781 imprisoned for the remainder of the war by Haldimand. In 1783 he went to London, England, and published, with the aid of Roubaud and Maseres, his Appel à la justice (London, 1784). This was published also in English under the title The case of Peter DuCalvet (London, 1784). He was lost at sea when returning to America in 1786. See B. Sulte, “Pierre DuCalvet” (Trans. Roy. Soc.
