John Charlton Fisher

Fisher, John Charlton (1794-1849), journalist, was born at Carlisle, England, on October 23, 1794. He edited the Albion newspaper in New-York for some years; and in 1823 he accepted the editorship of the Quebec Gazette, and with it the office of Queen's printer. In 1831 he incurred censure on account of his political articles, which were not in accord with the policy of the government, and he was forced to resign. He then became the editor of the Quebec Mercury; and in 1841 he founded a journal of his own, the Conservative. He died at sea on August 10, 1849, when returning to Canada from England. He was for a time president of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec. He contributed frequently to the Canadian Magazine (Montreal, 1823-5); and wrote also a Note on the ancient English or Anglo-Saxon language (Trans. Lit. and Hist. Soc., Quebec, vol. iii).
