Alfred Campbell Garrioch

 

Garrioch, Alfred Campbell (1848-1934), clergyman and author, was born at Kildonan, near Winnipeg, Manitoba, on February 10, 1848. He was educated at the parish school at Portage la Prairie, and was ordained a clergyman of the Church of England in 1875. In 1877 he established the first Protestant mission in the Peace River country; and he was engaged in missionary work in the Canadian west until 1902, when he became the Anglican incumbent at Rapid City, and later at Portage la Prairie. He retired from parochial work in 1905; and he died at Winnipeg on December 3, 1934. He translated the Bible into the Beaver Indian language, compiled an English-Beaver and Cree dictionary, and was the author of First furrows (Winnipeg, 1923), The far and furry north (Winnipeg, 1925), A hatchet mark in duplicate (Toronto, 1929), and The correction line (Winnipeg, 1933).
