Francis Ermatinger

Ermatinger, Francis (1798-1858), fur-trader, was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1798, the son of Lawrence Edward Ermatinger. He was educated in England, and, with his brother Edward was apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1818. He spent between thirty and forty years in the service of the Company, mostly on the Pacific coast; and was promoted to the rank of chief trader in 1841. He was described by Sir George Simpson in 1830 as "a bustling, active, boisterous fellow". He retired from the Company in 1853; and he died at St. Thomas, Canada West, on August 12, 1858. He married a daughter of William Sinclair, a chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company, and a relative by marriage of John McLoughlin.
