Edouard Gaston Deville

Deville, Edouard Gaston (1849-1924), surveyor, was born at La Charité sur Noire, Nièvre, France, on February 21, 1849. He was educated at the naval school at Brest, and for several years he served in the French navy. He had charge of hydrographic surveys in the South Sea islands, Peru, and other countries. In 1875, on his retirement from the French navy, he was appointed inspector of surveys in the province of Quebec; and in 1881 he became an inspector of Dominion land surveys. In 1885 he was appointed surveyor-general of Dominion lands, and he continued to serve in this post until his death at Ottawa on September 21, 1924. In 1881 he married Josephine, daughter of the Hon. Gédéon Ouimet. He was the author of Photographic surveying (Ottawa, 1889; 2nd ed., 1895).
