Edmundston

Edmundston, a town in Madawaska county, New Brunswick, on the St. John and Madawaska rivers, and on the Canadian Pacific Railway, Canadian National, and Temiscouata Railways, 79 miles south-east of Rivière-du-Loup and 250 miles north-west of St John. Formerly called Petit Sault, or Little Falls, it was given its present name in 1848 in honour of Sir Edmund Head, lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick (1848-54), and later governor-general of Canada (1855-61). It is chiefly a lumbering and railway town, and has several pulp, shingle, and planing mills in operation. It has a convent, a high school, and a weekly newspaper (Le Madawaska).
