David Chisholme

Chisholme, David (1796?-1842), journalist and author, was born in Rossshire, Scotland, about 1796. He came to Canada in 1822, and became the editor, first, of the Canadian Magazine and Literary Repository (Montreal, 182325), and then of the Canadian Review and Literary and Historical Journal (Montreal, 1824-26). Through the patronage of Lord Dalhousie, he was appointed clerk of the peace for the district of Three Rivers; but in 1836 he was dismissed from office on account of his high Tory views, and for the remainder of his life he edited the Montreal Gazette. He published The annals of Canada (Three Rivers, 1831), and Observations on the rights of the British colonies to representation in the imperial parliament (Three Rivers, 1832) ; and an early Upper Canadian imprint, The Lower Canada watchman (Kingston, 1829), is attributed to him. He died on September 24, 1842, at Montreal. At the time of his death, he was engaged on a history of Lower Canada ; and the papers which he had collected are in the Library of Parliament, Ottawa.
