Armand Renaud Lavergne

 

Lavergne, Armand Renaud (1880-1935), deputy speaker of the Canadian House of Commons (1930-35), was born at Arthabaskaville, Quebec, on February 21, 1880. He was educated at Laval University (B.L., 1899; LL.B., 1903), and was called to the bar in Quebec in 1903. He represented Montmagny in the House of Commons from 1904 to 1908, as a Liberal; and he was successively a Liberal, a Nationalist, and a Conservative. From 1908 to 1912 he sat in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec as a lieutenant of Henri Bourassa. In 1930 he was elected to represent Montmagny in the Canadian House of Commons, and he was deputy speaker of the House from 1930 to his death in Ottawa, on March 6, 1935. He was the author of Trente ans de vie nationale (Montreal, 1934).
