Andrew William Cochran

 

Cochran, Andrew William (1792-1849), civil secretary to the governor of Lower Canada, was born at Windsor, Nova Scotia, in 1792, the son of the Rev. William Cochran. He was educated at King's College, Windsor, and studied law. In 1812, however, he became assistant civil secretary to the governor of Lower Canada, under the administration of Sir G. Prevost ; and under Sir John Sherbrooke, and Lord Dalhousie he was civil secretary. From 1827 to 1841 he was a member of the Executive Council of Lower Canada; and he held various other offices under the Crown; but after 1841 he resumed the practice of law. He died at Quebec, of Asiatic cholera, on July 11, 1849. He was a D.C.L. of King's College, Windsor; and in 1837 he was president of the Quebec Literary and Historical Society. To the transactions of this society he contributed several papers.
