Alexander Ferrie Kemp

 

Kemp, Alexander Ferrie (1822-1884), clergyman and author, was born in Greenock, Scotland, in 1822. He was educated at Edinburgh University and at the Presbyterian College, London ; and having been ordained to the ministry, became chaplain to the 26th Cameronian Regiment, then stationed in Bermuda. In 1855 he was invited to become the pastor of St. Gabriel Street Church, Montreal ; and he remained in this charge until 1865. He was subsequently a professor in Olivet College, Michigan, and in Knox College, Galesburg ; and in his later years he was principal of ladies' colleges in Brantford and in Ottawa. He died on May 4, 1884. With the Rev. Donald Fraser (q.v.), he was editor of the Canadian Presbyter (Montreal, 1857-8); and he was the author of a Digest of the minutes of the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Canada (Montreal, 1861), and Rules and farms of procedure in the church courts (Montreal, 1865), as well as of a number of contributions to the Canadian Naturalist.
