Cape Spear

[c. 1960]

At Cape Spear is found the oldest lighthouse of Newfoundland. It has been restored by Parks Canada to its 1830's look. Cape Spear is the most easterly point of continental North America, the closest to Europe. In the Second World War, coastal defense batteries were erected to protect St. John's from enemy attack. Nowadays, the only invasion of the area is by friendly tourists who come to marvel at the antics of the many whales (Humpback, Minke and Fin) that frequent its waters and its colorful flora and fauna. Cape Spear is situated about 10 kilometres from St. John's.
