Calixa Lavallée

Lavallée, Calixa (1842-1891), musician, was born at Verchères, Canada East, on December 28, 1842. He studied music in the United States and in Europe ; and, on his return to America, he lived in Montreal, Quebec, and Boston. He died at Boston on February 21, 1891 ; and in 1933 his remains were transferred from Boston to Montreal . In 1867 he married at Lowell, Massachusetts, Josephine Gentilly; and by her be had one son. His chief title to fame is that he was the composer of the Canadian national hymn, O Canada. See H. Magnan, Calixa Lavallée (Bull. rech. hist ., 1927).
