Varennes, a village in Verchères county, Quebec, on the south shore of the St. Lawrence river, and on the Quebec Southern Railway, 16 miles below Quebec. It is named after the seigniory granted in 1666 to René Gaultier, sieur de Varennes, a lieutenant in the Carignan-Salières Regiment. Mixed farming and market-gardening are the chief occupations of the district in which it is situated.
