Michael Power

 

Power, Michael (1804-1847), Roman Catholic bishop of Toronto (1842-7), was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on October 17, 1804. He became a priest of the Roman Catholic Church, and was curé of La Prairie, Lower Canada, until 1841. In that year he was nominated bishop of the western part of the diocese of Kingston ; and in 1842 he was consecrated first bishop of Toronto. He espoused the cause of the Jesuits in Upper Canada ; and for a time he was chairman of the council of public instruction in Upper Canada. He died in Toronto on October 1, 1847.
