Hon. Joseph Amable Thomas Chapais, LL.D.

 

CHAPAIS, Hon. Joseph Amable Thomas, LL.L., LL.D. - Advocate. Born St., Denis-de-la-Bouteillerie, Que., March 23, 1858, son of Hon. Senator Jean-Charles Chapais, one of the Fathers of Confederation, and Henrietta Georgina (Dionne) Chapais. Educated: Ste Anne's College; Laval University (LL.L., 1879; Lit.D. Hon., 1898). Called to the Quebec Bar, 1879; practised his profession in Quebec; Private Secretary to Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec, 1879-84; Professor, Laval University, Feb., 1907. Unsuccessful candidate to House of Commons, 1891; called to the Legislative Council, Quebec, March 8, 1892; Minister without Portfolio, Taillon Government, and Leader of Government in Legislative Council, Jan., 1893; Speaker of the Legislative Council, April, 1895; President, Executive Council, May, 1896; Minister of Colonization and Mines, Jan., 1897 ; retired from office, May, 1897; voted against the abolition of the Legislative Council, March, 1900. Editor, Le Courrier du Canada, Quebec, 1884-1901. Author, Les Congrégations Enseignantes et le Brevet de Capacité, (1893); Discours et Conférences , (1898); Le Serment du Roi, (1901); Jean Talon, Intendant de la Nouvelle-France, (1904); Mélanges de Polémique et d'études Religieuses, Politiques et Littéraires, (1905); Le Marquis de Montcalm, (1911); Cours d'Histoire du Canada, 8 Vols. (1918-1923); various essays. Created a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, France, 1902, and Commandeur de l'Ordre de Saint-Grégoire le Grand, 1914; F.R.S.C., 1912; called to the Senate of Canada, 1919; President of the Royal Society of Canada, 1923. Married Marie Sophie Justine Langevin, daughter of late Sir Hector Louis Langevin, K.C.M.G., G.B., Quebec , January, 1884. Conservative. Roman Catholic. Residence: 142 Ste Anne Street, Quebec.
