John Castell Hopkins

Hopkins, John Castell (1864-1923), publicist, was born at Dyersville, Iowa, on April 1, 1864, the son of John C. Hopkins and Phelia Heudebourck. He was educated at Bowmanville, Ontario, and entered the employ of the Imperial Bank. He ten became a journalist and a publicist. He contributed copiously to magazines and encyclopaedias in England , the United States and Canada ; he edited Canada, an encyclopaedia of the country (6 vols., Toronto, 1897-1900); in 1901 he edited Morang's annual register of Canadian affairs, and from 1902 to 1922 he wrote the Canadian annual review. In addition to a large number of pamphlets, he was the author of Toronto, an historical sketch (Toronto 1893), The life and work of the Rt. Hon. Sir John Thompson (Brantford, 1895), The story of the Dominion (Toronto, 1899; new ed. 1922), The progress of Canada in the nineteenth century (Edinburgh, 1900), Canada at war (Toronto, 1919), and The province of Ontario in the war (Toronto, 1919). Though much of his work was done under the pressure of circumstances, it has much value for reference purposes. He died at Toronto on November 5, 1923. In 1906 he married Annie Beatrice Mary, daughter of J. J. Bonner, Toronto ; and by her he had two daughters.
