Fort Miami

Fort Miami, a name applied to two forts built by the French. The first was built by La Salle in 1678 on the right bank of the Illinois river, was surrendered to the British in 1761, was captured by Pontiac in 1763, and was destroyed before 1794. The second was a fort built in 1715 on the Maumee river, a few miles above lake Erie, where the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, stands to-day. It was surrendered to the British in 1761, captured by Pontiac in 1763, rebuilt by Simcoe in 1794, and was handed over to the Americans in 1796. The name was then changed to Fort Wayne.
