Edwin H. King

 

King, Edwin H. (1828-1896), president of the Bank of Montreal (1869-73), was born in Ireland in 1828, and came to Canada about 1850. He entered the Bank of British North America; but in 1857 he joined the Bank of Montreal, and in 1863 he became its general manager, and in 1869 its president. He exercised an important influence on Canadian affairs during the negotiations leading to Confederation. In 1873 he retired from office, and went to live in England. He died at Monte Carlo on April 14, 1896.
