Daughters of Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Daughters of Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus . This Congregation was established in 1823 in a little parish in France. It developed rapidly until the turmoil of 1902 in France, when the religious were expelled from the schools. About a third of the Congregation's members took on a secular costume to continue their apostolate in France . Others prepared to leave for foreign countries. In 1905, four. sisters sailed for the United States, and took a residence in Newport, Vermont. Their début was exceedingly humble, but gradually the community developed and prospered. In 1911, Mgr. Paul LaRocque created in Sherbrooke, Quebec, the Canadian novitiate. The Congregation of the Sacred Heart in Canada now counts 300 members devoted to the instruction of several thousands of children and to the care of the sick in 24 establishments.
