Charles Garnier

Garnier, Charles (1606-1649), missionary and martyr, was born in Paris, France, on May 25, 1606, of "a rich and noble family", and was educated at the Collage de Clermont. In 1624 he entered the Jesuit novitiate; and in 1636 he was sent to Quebec. He went as a missionary to the Hurons in 1637; and in 1639 he began, with Father Isaac Jogues the evangelization of the Petun nation. He laboured among these Indians for ten years; and on December 7, 1649, he was massacred by the Iroquois at the Indian village of St-Jean. He was canonized in 1930.
