Cayuga

Cayuga, the name of one of the tribes of the Iroquois confederation, formerly occupying the shores of Cayuga lake, in New York state. Its local council was composed of four clan phratries, and this became the pattern, according to tradition, of the confederation of the Five Nations of the Iroquois. The Cayugas fought on the British side during the American Revolution, and at the close of the Revolution, they numbered a little more than 1,000; but, through intermixture with the whites and other Indians, the tribe has now lost its identity.
