BANCROFT, Joseph Austen, B.A., A.M., Ph.D. - Geologist, Dawson Professor of Geology, McGill University , Montreal . Born North Sydney, Cape Breton, N.S., April 8, 1882, son of Rev. James William Bancroft (deceased) and Mary Louise Fowler, of Lawrencetown, N.S. Educated: Prepared for University at High School, Springhill, N.S.; Acadia University, N.S.; Yale University; University of Leipzig; University of Bonn; McGill University; B.A. (Acadia, 1903); B.A. (Yale, 1904); A.M. (Yale, 1906); Ph.D. (McGill, 1910). Demonstrator in Geology, McGill University, Montreal, 1905-08 ; Lecturer in Geology, McGill University, 1908-10; Asst. Professor, Geology, McGill University, 1910-12; Associate Professor, Geology, McGill University, 1912-13; Dawson Professor, Geology, McGill University, 1913 to date. From May, 1921, to Sept., 1922, was granted leave of absence from McGill University to become Asst. Gen. Manager of Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting & Power Co., at Anyox, B.C. Author of Geology of the Coast and Islands between the Strait of Georgia and Queen Charlotte Sound, B .C. (published by Geological Survey of Canada as Memoir No. 23, 1913); Report On the Copper Deposits of the Eastern Townships of Prov. of Quebec (published by Bureau of Mines of Province of Quebec, 1914); six reports is giving results of exploration in Northern and N. W. Quebec (published by Bureau of Mines, Quebec, 1911-15); assisted Dr. F. D. Adams in some of his experimental work on Rock Flowage and joint Author with him in paper "On the Amount of Internal Friction Developed in Rocks during Deformation and on the Relative Plasticity of Different Types of Rocks," by F. D. Adams and J. Austen Bancroft, 1917; various other papers on geological subjects. Married Jeanne Poirier, Paris, France, March 11, 1910. Societies: Fellow of Royal Society of Canada (F.R.S.C.); Fellow of Geological Society of America (F.G.S.A.); Canadian Mining Institute; American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers; at Yale University, became member, both of Phi Beta Kappa Society and Sigma Xi; University Lodge, A.F. & A.M., No. 84 Q.R.; also Arch and Scottish Rite. Clubs: University and Rotary, Montreal . Recreations: Exploration, camping, canoeing, hunting, fishing. Residence: 461 Grosvenor Ave., Westmount, Que.
