Émile Chevalier
Chevalier, Émile (1828-1879), journalist and novelist, was born at Chatillon, France, on September 13, 1828. He fled from France on the accession of Napoleon III in 1851, and in 1852 settled in Canada. He was employed on the staff of several newspapers in Montreal, and was for a time librarian of the Institut Canadien. In 1860 he returned to France ; and he died in Paris on August 25, 1879. While in Canada he published several novels, L'héroine de Châteauguay (Montreal, 1858), L'Iroquoise de Caughnawaga (Montreal, 1858), and Le pirate du St. Laurent (Montreal, 1859) ; and he translated Ebenezer Clemo's Canadian homes under the title, Le foyer canadien ou le mystère dévoilé (Montreal, 1859).
