Edward Arnold

 

General Freight Claim Agent, Canadian National Railways. Born Kingston, Ont., Aug.,26, 1864, son of George and Mary (White) Arnold. Educated: Kingston Public Schools and Dominion Business College. Entered the service of the Grand Trunk Railway System at Montreal, 1880, serving as Operator, Ticket Agent and Relieving Agent, between Montreal and Toronto, covering a number of years. Transferred to Chicago at request of the late Geo. B. Reeve, formerly Vice-President and General Manager, handling claim correspondence under that gentleman. Filled the position of Travelling Freight Claim Agent at Battle Creek , Mich., for a number of years. Was called to Montreal to fill the position of Freight Claim Agent, April, 1908. Appointed Vice-President and President of the Freight Claim Association, now Section 7, of the American Railway Ass'n., and held office 1913-16. Has served on all the important Committees of that section and was appointed Chairman of the Arbitration Committee and afterwards appointed to Appeal Committee of that body. Was active and took the initiative in appointing the Freight Claim Prevention Committee which has been instrumental in saving the carriers of North America large sums of money through the prevention of claims and the better handling of the various commodities transported by them. In May, 1923, was appointed a Member of the General Committee, Section 7, American Railway Ass'n., as representative of all the carriers, the duty of the Committee being to outline policy of the carriers and handle such matters as pertaining to the relations between the public and the Railway Companies. Director, Merchants Association of Montreal . Married Alta Belle Simons, daughter of David Simons, Dec., 1905; has one daughter, Carolyn. Club: Athelstan ( Battle Creek , Mich. ). Societies: A.F. & A.M., Cornwall , No. 123; American Ornithologist Union , New York ; Cooper Ornithologist Club, San Francisco. Recreation: Study of Bird Life. Unitarian. Residence: Canterbury Apartments, 64 Durocher Street, Montreal.
