William Odber Raymond

Raymond, William Odber (1853-1923), clergyman and historian, was born at Woodstock , New Brunswick, on February 3, 1853 , the second son of Lieut.-Col. Charles W. Raymond. He was educated at the Woodstock grammar school and at the University of New Brunswick (B.A., 1876; M.A., 1891; LL.D., 1901); and he was ordained a priest of the Church of England in 1879. From 1878 to 1884 he was stationed at Stanley, New Brunswick ; and from 1884 to 1920 he was rector of St. Mary's Church, Saint John, New Brunswick . In 1908 he became archdeacon of Saint John : After retirement from active parochial work, he removed to Toronto ; and here he died on November 23, 1923. In 1879 he married Julia Nelson, of Saint John ; and by her he had one son and one daughter. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1906; and he was an outstanding authority on the history of the Maritime provinces of Canada. In addition to numerous papers contributed to the Transactions of the Royal Society of Canada, the Collections of the New Brunswick Historical Society and other periodicals, he wrote The history of the river St. John (Saint John, New Brunswick, 1905), and he edited the valuable Winslow papers (Saint John, New Brunswick, 1901).
