Philippe Baby Casgrain

Casgrain, Philippe Baby (1826-1917), historian, was born in Quebec, on December 30, 1826, the son of the Hon. Charles Eusèbe Casgrain and Anne Elizabeth, daughter of the Hon. Jacques Baby. He was educated at the College of Ste. Anne, and was called to the bar of Lower Canada in 1850 (Q.C. 1879). From 1872 to 1891 he sat in the Canadian House of Commons for L'Islet. He then became clerk of the Circuit and Revision Court of the province of Quebec. He was the author of Letellier de St. Just et son temps (Quebec, 1885), Mémorial des familles Casgrain, Baby, et Perrault (Quebec, 1898), La vie de Joseph François Perrault (Quebec, 1898), and a number of publications dealing with the history and archaeology of the city of Quebec and its environs. He died at Quebec on May 23, 1917. In 1854 he married Mathilde, daughter of Col. F. X. Perrault, and by her he had three sons. In 1898, 1899, and 1906, he was president of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec.
