Valleyfield

 

Valleyfield (Salaberry de Valleyfield), a city in Beauharnois county, Quebec, is situated on the south bank of the St. Lawrence river at the foot of lake St. Francis, 30 miles west of Montreal. It is at the western terminus of the Beauharnois canal, and is served by the large Great Lake steamers and by the Canadian National and New York Central Railways. It is one of the most important industrial centres in Canada, having cotton mills, paper mills, artificial silk mills, flour mills, bronze powder works, machine shops, etc. There are about 3,000 employees in the cotton and artificial silk mills alone. It has a seminary, attended by about 500 pupils, a bilingual normal school, and an institute for the higher education in the English language. There is a weekly newspaper Progrès de Valleyfield.
