Thomas Louis Connolly

Connolly, Thomas Louis (1815-1876), Roman Catholic archbishop of Halifax (1859-76), was born in county Cork, Ireland, in 1815. He was educated at Rome, joined the Capuchin order, and was ordained a priest at Lyons, France. After serving for several years in Ireland, he came to Nova Scotia in 1842, as secretary to Archbishop Walsh, and in 1845 he became vicar-general of the diocese of Halifax. In 1852 he became bishop of Fredericton, New Brunswick ; and in 1859 he succeeded to the archbishopric of Halifax . His chief work was in charitable and educational lines; but his influence was thrown also against the Fenian movement. He died at Halifax, on July 27, 1876.
